Illusion in Winter

I’ve now burned an entire afternoon

tracing in spare silences the sheet the house’s

shadow drapes across the simple snow.

The branches stitched in white bear no prints

I can see, and the slope of hills chill

the sky to a lie of white

                                             unending as a line.
