DON’T BE WHERE YOU DON’T BELONG
The advice came just weeks
into homelessness, a start
so fresh even the failures
were warm. They took
me in like a stray would
an old bone and it wasn’t
long before I thought
I belonged, forgot
about love.
I learned to follow cities, seek
out shelters and missions.
If it was dark enough
I could hear traffic lights
change, then traffic,
all of which reminded me
of a Bible story I couldn’t
remember.
